The origin story of the Tulip Chair, which is one of the leading retro designs, was to eliminate the clutter of table and chair legs that, in the designer's words, turned indoor spaces into an "ugly, confusing, restless world," and the design of a single-legged chair had never been attempted before. The design of the Tulip Chair as a sculptural and single-legged chair stems from this idea. Resembling a flower but also reminiscent of a stemmed wine glass, the Tulip Chair is part of Saarinen's final furniture series. The Tulip chair appears as if it's made from a single material, but it is supported by an aluminum body with fused plastic coating.

Third on the list is the Anglepoise Lamp. In 1932, automotive engineer George Carwardine patented a new type of coil spring that worked on suspension.
